Sure, your're packed and ready to go. You've checked your list and haven't forgotten anything. You are ready to get away from it all. But wait, don't forget what you are leaving behind. Your house! You need to be sure you leave your house safe so when you come back from your stress free vacation you aren't in for a surprise. Don't forget your house while you are away. Take a few simple steps to protect your home.
Start by asking a neighbor to just keep an eye on anything. Give them a contact number to reach you by in case anything looks suspicious or they need to alert you of any activity. If you have arranged for a pet sitter, let your neighbors know to expect someone new at the house.
Keep your home neat and tidy outside, don't leave out unnecessary equipment, and cancel mail and newspapers if you'll be gone for a length of time.
Be sure your doors and windows are secure, check that the latches connect well, and use deadbolts. Remember to lock the access door from your garage to the house as well.
Make use of timers on your lights, and install motion sensors on outdoor porch lights. You could even put a timer on a television or radio.
You also want to be sure not to leave valuables in plain sight. Pull the curtains and blinds. You could even ask a friend to hold on to certain valuables for you.
Make some noise, if you have an alarm, use it. Home improvement stores also sell 'do-it-yourself'' alarms at low costs. Even if you don't have an alarm, a simple sign or sticker will give the impression that you do.
Don't forget the little things too while your gone. Like your houseplants, give them a good watering. Mow your lawn and trim shrubs. Ask your neighbor to put your trash at the curb on trash collection day.
Check your appliances and faucets and be sure to turn them off. No need to take any chances with a water leak, or faulty wiring. You should even unplug your computer and disconnect LAN lines from modems. This will help protect your personal information on your computer while you are gone.
Place a baggie of ice cubes in your freezer, this way, if there is a power outage while you are gone, and the food thaws and then refreezes you'll know.
Consider using a house sitter. This could even help with the problem of what to do with the fish, hamster, cat, dog, and even the plants. Be sure it's someone you trust. Lastly, contact your local police department. Many departments will offer a courtesy drive by. Their presence in your neighborhood is always a deterrent for thieves.
Take some time to remember your house, you'll be glad you did upon returning home.
Have a great vacation!
